The Real Value of Online Degrees

by admin on January 19, 2010

There are many misconceptions about online degrees. Nearly 60 percent of hiring professionals view a degree from an online institution as second rate, based on their perceptions about the student’s lack of interaction with their peers, and the lack of real-time pedagogical exchange.

Online programs often tend to require much more social interaction than the traditional classroom setting, however. Professors of many online institutions require participation that fosters group projects and lots of social interaction. Because of the virtual nature of the programs, classmates are able to contact one another at all hours, despite location. There’s video chatting, discussion boards, and email, all of which are often monitored for grading. This allowed for sincere communication, including encouragement and constructive criticism.

As for pedagogical exchange, virtual classrooms offer teaching that is just as effective as that offered in traditional classrooms. The online programs offer the chance to contact instructors at any time. And since everything is recorded, discussions can be looked at repeatedly, and one-on-one contact between student and teacher is not only encouraged, but sometimes mandatory.

Those who take online courses do so because they often don’t have the time or resources to go to school in person. This means they are more hard-working and more dedicated to their education. This makes graduates more valuable, and employers are quickly changing their attitudes to accommodate those that have graduated from online institutions.
